What is BS EN 62722-1 – Luminaire performance about ?
BS EN 62722-1 is an international standard of the BS EN 62722 series that discusses the requirements for luminaire performance. A luminaire is a complete lighting unit, comprised of a light source (lamp or lamps), together with the parts that distribute the light, position and protect the lamps, and connect the lamps to the power supply. The luminaire's function is to direct light to appropriate locations, without causing glare or discomfort.
BS EN 62722-1 covers specific performance and environmental requirements for luminaires, incorporating electric light sources for operation from supply voltages up to 1000 V. Unless otherwise detailed, performance data covered under the scope of this standard are for the luminaires in a condition representative of new manufacture, with any specified initial ageing procedures completed.
BS EN 62722-1 covers requirements for luminaires to support energy-efficient use and responsible environmental management to the end of life. The object of this Part 1 is to provide a set of requirements that are considered to be generally applicable to most types of luminaires.
Note: Semi-luminaires are not covered under the scope of BS EN 62722-1.
Who is BS EN 62722-1 – Luminaire performance for ?
BS EN 62722-1 on luminaire performance applies to:
- Manufacturer of luminaire lights
- Quality testing personnel
- Electrical engineer
Why should you use BS EN 62722-1 – Luminaire performance ?
Luminaire efficiency is a ratio of the luminaire’s total luminous flux versus its input power at rated supply voltage, excluding any emergency lighting charging power.
BS EN 62722-1 provides the guidance for luminaires which are tested with the light source and controlgear specified by the manufacturer. BS EN 62722-1 provides the presentation of this data the basis of its measurement, and the associated tolerances that may be reasonably expected. Information to support responsible environmental use is also included in BS EN 62722-1.
The provisions in BS EN 62722-1 represent the technical knowledge of experts from the fields of the luminaire industry and associated components such as lamps and controlgear.
BS EN 62722-1 provides you with comprehensive guidance useful for the requirements of luminaire performance.
What’s changed since the last update ?
BS EN 62722-1:2016 supersedes DD IEC/PAS 62722-1:2011, which is withdrawn on 8 October 2017. It includes:
- The inclusion of more precise requirements for the comparison of the photometric distribution shape, with the comparison method given in Annex D
- Further regional standards added to the schedule given in Annex A
