What is BS EN 1439 about?

BS EN 1439 on LPG equipment and accessories specifies the procedures to be adopted when checking transportable refillable LPG cylinders before, during and after filling. BS EN 1439 is applicable to transportable refillable LPG cylinders of water capacity not exceeding 150 l and deemed to be fitted with valves.

BS EN 1439 is applicable to cylinders complying with RID/ADR [6] [7] (including pi marked cylinders) and to existing non-RID/ADR cylinder populations.

BS EN 1439 is applicable to the following:

  • Welded and brazed steel LPG cylinders with a specified minimum wall thickness
  • Welded steel LPG cylinders without a specified minimum wall thickness
  • Welded aluminium LPG cylinders
  • Composite LPG cylinders
  • Over-moulded cylinders (OMC)

Note: BS EN 1439 does not apply to the requirements for filling LPG cylinders that are designed and equipped for filling by the user and to the requirements for filling LPG containers on vehicles.

Who is BS EN 1439 for?

BS EN 1439 on transportable refillable LPG cylinders is applicable to:

  • The petrochemical industry
  • Gas supply and distribution agencies
  • Manufacturers and suppliers of LPG cylinders and equipment
  • Quality control personnel

Why should you use BS EN 1439?

Containers of high-pressure gases and liquids need to adhere to the highest quality standards due to inherent risks associated with such substances. Regular checking ensures the safety of users and handlers of this equipment, and also ensures that the contents within are intact.

BS EN 1439 provides you with performance and safety requirements for transportable refillable LPG cylinders. This includes the fitting of valve caps and plugs, and also cylindrical valves. Valves are checked for physical damage, corrosion, or other defects. For metallic cylinders, the inspection of the foot-ring for corrosion or damage determines the need for a more thorough external visual examination of the cylinder base. These checks are conducted prior to dispatch or storage.

BS EN 1439 also discusses environmental aspects to be considered regarding equipment and accessories.

What’s changed since the last update?
