What is BS EN 50047 on Position switches about?

BS EN 50047 is an international standard that includes specifications for various low voltage switchgear and control gear devices.

BS EN 50047 applies to certain position switches with automatic return actuator, the standardized dimensions of which and the characteristics necessary for their application are given below. A larger size (42.5x80) is standardized in EN 50041.

BS EN 50047 includes four types of position switches with the following actuator types:

  • Roller lever actuator (form A)
  • Rounded plunger actuator (form B)
  • Roller plunger actuator (form C)
  • Roller lever arm (form E)

BS EN 50047 is covering devices fitted with either independent (snap) action contact elements, designated (1), or dependent (slow make and break), designated (2) in Clause 5.

Who is BS EN 50047 on Position switches for?

BS EN 50047 on position switches is useful for:

  • Manufacturers and suppliers for control switches
  • Dealers and distributors for control switches
  • Designers of electrical equipment, control switches

Why should you use BS EN 50047 on Position switches?

The control switches which help to maintain the positioning of the switchgear and control gear parts are called position switches.

BS EN 50047 specifies the dimensions and characteristics for control switches in the type of position switches to help designers and manufacturers to achieve standardization and safety while production of switches, and their components. It helps you in fixating the position of low voltage switchgear and the control gear equipment firmly.

BS EN 50047 helps its users for assessment of risk and reduces the risks by providing them with the appropriate design, safeguarding, information for use, and preventive measures in order to ensure the safety of the control switches.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN 50047:2019 supersedes BS EN 50047:1981, which is withdrawn.
