What is BS EN 60947-5-5‒ Emergency stop devices about?
BS EN 60947-5-5 is the fifth part of an international standard that covers guidelines for low-voltage switchgear and controlgear.
BS EN 60947-5-5 provides detailed specifications relating to the electrical and mechanical construction of emergency stop devices with mechanical latching function and to their testing.
BS EN 60947-5-5 is applicable to electrical control circuit devices and switching elements that are used to initiate an emergency stop signal. Such devices may be either provided with their own enclosure or installed according to the manufacturer's instructions.
BS EN 60947-5-5 specifies requirements for control circuit devices and switching elements like marking and product information, electrical requirements, mechanical requirements, testing of the mechanical design, additional requirements for tripwire switches and colour coding, etc.
Note 1: BS EN 60947-5-5 does not deal with any specific requirements on noise as the noise emission of electrical emergency stop devices with mechanical latching function is not considered to be a relevant hazard.
Note 2: BS EN 60947-5-5 does not apply to:
- Emergency stop devices for the non-electrical control circuits, for example hydraulic, pneumatic circuit
- Emergency stop devices without mechanical latching function
Who is BS EN 60947-5-5‒ Emergency stop devices for?
BS EN 60947-5-5 on emergency stop devices is useful for:
- Manufacturers and suppliers of low-voltage switchgear and controlgear
- Dealers and distributors of low-voltage switchgear and controlgear
- Designers of low-voltage switchgear and controlgear
- Test/ service providers for low-voltage switchgear and controlgear
Why should you use BS EN 60947-5-5‒ Emergency stop devices?
An emergency stop device is a manually operated control circuit device that is used to initiate an emergency stop function or an emergency switching off function.
BS EN 60947-5-5 deals specifically with electrical emergency stop devices with mechanical latching function and gives you additional electrical and mechanical requirements that comply with multiple international standards.
BS EN 60947-5-5 gives requirements for the emergency stop function of a machine, irrespective of the energy used, additional requirements for an emergency stop function realized by the electrical equipment of a machine. It also helps you specify the electrical characteristics of electromechanical control circuit devices which helps in increasing the longevity and efficiency of the devices.
