What is BS EN 12945-Determining the neutralizing value of liming materials about?

BS EN 12945 is a standard that covers technical specifications for determining the neutralizing value of liming materials, ensuring the quality, usability, and performance in agricultural applications.

BS EN 12945 specifies two methods for determining the neutralizing value (NV) of liming materials. Method A applies to all liming materials except silicate liming materials. Method B applies to all liming materials.

The methods in BS EN 12945 do not correctly consider the potential neutralizing value of material containing more than 3 % P2O5. For a more accurate agronomic assessment of products containing more than 3 % P2O5, determine the liming efficiency according to EN 14984.

Note: The methods described in ISO 6598 and ISO 7497 can be used to determine P2O5 content.

Who is BS EN 12945-Determining the neutralizing value of liming materials for?

BS EN 12945 on determining the neutralizing value of liming materials applies to:

  • Manufacturers of liming materials for agricultural applications
  • Dealers and importers of liming materials for agricultural applications
  • Testing houses and labs for liming materials
  • Soil inspection services

Why should you use BS EN 12945-Determining the neutralizing value of liming materials?

Liming depends on pH levels of soils, soil types, crops to be grown and regional climatic conditions. Neutralizing value in agricultural lime is relative value using the calcium oxide content, magnesium oxide content and fineness to express the effectiveness of agricultural liming material in neutralizing soil acidity.

BS EN 12945 provides users guidance on principle, reagents, apparatus, sampling, procedure, calculation, expression of results, precision and test report, ensuring the accuracy of results and enabling safety, performance and longevity in agricultural applications.

BS EN 12945 provides users guidance on titrimetric method A and method B to determine neutralizing value in liming materials. BS EN 12945 also provides you with a step-by-step procedure for the method, ensuring users do the technique correctly.

The adoption of BS EN 12945 allows users to determine the neutralizing value of liming materials, enabling control of soil acidity and improvement in soil structure.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN 12945:2014+A1:2016 supersedes BS EN 12945:2014, which is now withdrawn. Changes in BS EN 12945:2014+A1:2016 include -

  • Clause 9 modified taking into account that the neutralizing value may be expressed as CaO-equivalents or alternatively as HO--equivalents
  • Annex B with conversion factors between CaO and HO- added
  • Bibliography revised
  • Document editorially revised
