What is BS EN 1645-1 - Leisure accommodation vehicles about?  

BS EN 1645 is a series of European standards on leisure accommodation vehicles that discusses  the requirements relating to the safety of caravans. BS EN 1645-1 is the first part of a series of documents on leisure accommodation vehicles. BS EN 1645-1 specifies requirements intended to ensure the safety and health of people when they use caravans for temporary or seasonal habitation. 

BS EN 1645-1 also specifies the corresponding test methods. 

Requirements applicable to road safety are not included in the scope of BS EN 1645-1. BS EN 1645-1 applies exclusively to rigid and rigid folding caravans as defined in EN 13878.

What’s changed since the last update?  

BS EN 1645-1:2018 supersedes BS EN 1645-1:2012, which is withdrawn. 

In relation to EN 1645-1:2012, the main technical changes are: 

  • Reference to EN 1645-2 (withdrawn) deleted throughout the document 
  • In 5.5.2 “Minimum tread dimensions”, requirements specified 
  • 6.1.3 “Protection against falling out” simplified 
  • In 7.4.2 “Outlets and couplings from toilet holding tanks”, requirements specified and extended 
  • 12.1.2 “Escape path” and 12.1.3 “Sanitation compartment” clarified, 12.1.6 “Emergency windows and emergency panels” modified, 12.2 “Protection of flammable elements” specified 
  • In Clause 14 “User's handbook”, information added and new types of fire extinguishers covered
