What is ISO 27587 about?

ISO 27587 is a series on leather. Leather is a strong, flexible and durable material obtained from the tanning, or chemical treatment, of animal skins and hides to prevent decay. ISO 27587 specifies a method for the determination of free formaldehyde, which is released under dynamic conditions when the sample is heated in an inert dry atmosphere, in-process auxiliaries for leather. The analytical result obtained according to this procedure is expressed in milligrams per kilogram (mg/kg) sample.

Who is ISO 27587 for?

ISO 27587 on leather is useful for:

  • Leather manufacturer
  • Leather testing institution
  • Quality control personnel

Why should you use ISO 27587?

Leather can be used to make a variety of items, including clothing, footwear, handbags, furniture, tools, and sports equipment, and lasts for decades. Formaldehyde occurs naturally in the environment where it is present in extremely low concentrations, but this highly reactive chemical compound is also widely used as a common building block by the chemical industry to synthesize more complex materials. ISO 27587 determination of free formaldehyde from leather.

It is important to know about the determination of free formaldehyde from leather because Some products used in the leather industry, especially tanning, and retaining agents, contain formaldehyde which can leave finished leather products with detectable levels of free-formaldehyde—a residual, unbound compound that is restricted in leather. Formaldehyde can irritate the eyes, mucous membranes, and skin and can cause allergic reactions.

For the best quality, safety, and comfortability of wearing leather is most important for the aspect of a company to reach the end-user so if all these three aspects will get in a specific product, then the demand for this product will automatically increase and it leads to increase the production level, sales, profit, revenue turnover, and goodwill of the company. Using ISO 27587 you can specify a method for the determination of free formaldehyde.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN ISO 27587:2021 supersedes ISO 27587:2009. BS EN ISO 27587:2021 includes some technical changes with respect to ISO 27587:2009. These include:

  • The wording in formaldehyde-2,4-DNPH analytical standard, calibration standards, 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine cartridges, setting of initial conditions, sample preparation, analysis, and HPLC (High-Performance Liquid Chromatography) conditions have been modified
  • A new U-tube figure has been inserted
  • The recommended HPLC conditions previously in Clause 8 are now changed
