What is ISO 13365-1 about?
ISO 13365-1 is the first part of the multi-series ISO 13365. ISO 13365-1 specifies a test method by acetonitrile solvent extraction for the determinate one of the total contents (solvent extractible) of the following preservative agents in leather by liquid chromatography:
- 2-(thiocyanomethylthio)-benzothiazole (TCMTB)
- 4-chloro-3-methyl phenol (PCMC)
- 2-phenyl phenol (OPP)
- 2-octylisothiazol-3(2H)-one (OIT)
ISO 13365-1 can also be used to determine breakdown products of these preservative agents, which protect the leather from microbiological attacks.

Why should you use ISO 13365‑1?
Liquid chromatography (LC) is an analytical chromatographic technique that is useful for separating ions or molecules that are dissolved in a solvent.
ISO 13365-1 states some specific chemicals to determine the preservatives which are as follows:
- 2-(thiocyanomethylthio)-benzothiazole (TCMTB): to control the growth of fungi and sulphate reducing bacteria
- 4-chloro-3-methyl phenol (PCMC): for maintaining low toxicity and quality performance of the product
- 2-phenylphenol (OPP): for the safety and protection purpose of the end-users
- 2-octylisothiazol-3(2H)-one (OIT): it is low toxicity, easy to operate, for protection purpose
ISO 13365-1 is beneficial for making good quality leather.
What is changed since the last update?
BS EN ISO 13365-1:2020 supersedes ISO 13365:2011. BS EN ISO 13365-1:2020includes some technical changes with respect to ISO 13365:2011. These include:
- The title has been changed to indicate the method of extraction
- The use of HPLC with mass spectrometric (MS) detection has been included
- Reagents have been technically modified.
- The chromatographic conditions (previously in 6.3) are now included in a new annex also include additional conditions for use with MS detection.
