What is BS EN 50342-1-Requirements for lead-acid starter batteries about?

BS EN 50342-1 is the first part of a multi-series standard that covers requirements for lead-acid starter batteries, ensuring safety and performance in automobile applications.

BS EN 50342-1 is applicable to lead-acid batteries with a nominal voltage of 12 V, used primarily as a power source for the starting of internal combustion engines, lighting and also for auxiliary equipment of internal combustion engine vehicles. These batteries are commonly called “starter batteries”.

BS EN 50342-1 also includes batteries with a nominal voltage of 6 V. All referenced voltages need to be divided by two for 6 V batteries.

BS EN 50342-1 is applicable to batteries for the following purposes:

  • Batteries for passenger cars
  • Batteries for commercial and industrial vehicles

Note: BS EN 50342-1 does not apply to batteries for other purposes, for example, the starting of railcar internal combustion engines or for motorcycles.

Who is BS EN 50342-1-Requirements for lead-acid starter batteries for?

BS EN 50342-1 on Requirements for lead-acid starter batteries applies to:

  • Manufacturers of lead-acid starter batteries
  • Dealers and importers of lead-acid starter batteries
  • Testing houses and labs for batteries
  • Automobile manufacturers
  • Safety and quality assessment services

Why should you use BS EN 50342-1-Requirements for lead-acid starter batteries?

Lead-acid batteries are designed for starting automotive engines. Lead-acid batteries have a large number of thin plates designed for maximum surface area, and, therefore, maximum current output. Because the thinner and lighter cell plates do not extend all the way to the bottom of the battery casing, starting batteries are lighter than deep-cycle batteries of the same size.

BS EN 50342-1 provides users guidance on designation of starter batteries, condition of delivery, electrical characteristics, and mechanical characteristics that facilitate transportation condition and usability of lead-acid starter batteries.

BS EN 50342-1 provides users guidance on test methods and requirements, including capacity check, cranking performance test, high current discharge test, charge acceptance and retention, endurance in cycle test, corrosion test and more, ensuring the operational stability, functioning and performance in lead-acid starter batteries.

The guidance in BS EN 50342-1 allows users to develop and assess lead-acid starter batteries, ensuring efficiency, operability, and longevity in automobile applications.
