What is ISO 66212 about?

ISO 6621 is a series of international standards on internal combustion engines of a road vehicle that specifies the measuring principles of piston rings. ISO 66212 is the second part of the ISO 6621 series of standards dealing with piston rings for reciprocating internal combustion engines. ISO 66212 defines the measuring principles to be used for measuring piston rings and applies to piston rings up to and including 200 mm diameter for reciprocating internal combustion engines.

NOTE: ISO 6621 can be used for piston rings for compressors working under analogous conditions.

Who is ISO 66212 for?

ISO 66212 on piston rings is useful for:

  • Mechanical engineers
  • Designers and manufacturers of piston rings
  • Manufacturers of road vehicle engines

Why should you use ISO 66212?

A piston ring is a metallic split ring that is attached to the outer diameter of a piston in an internal combustion engine or steam engine to seal the gap between the piston and the cylinder wall. ISO 66212 specifies the general measuring conditions of piston rings for inspection of engines along with the characteristics and measuring principles in accordance with ring width, tangential and diametral force, light tightness, and various such parameters.

With obedience and compliance to ISO 6621-2, you could be able to design and manufacture piston rings with precise measurements, assisting users and helping businesses in providing lubrication and wear prevention piston rings for road vehicle engines, and ensuring consistent performance with reliability and cheap cost. In this manner, you could produce accurate and reliable products.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS ISO 66212:2020 supersedes BS ISO 66212:2003. BS ISO 66212:2020 includes some technical changes with respect to BS ISO 66212:2003. These include:

  • Oil ring diameter range for ring widths 3,0 mm and 3,5 mm increased up to 160 mm.
