What is ISO 11807-1 about?  

ISO 11807-1 is the first part of the ISO 11807 multi-series that focuses on integrated optics. ISO 11807-1 defines basic terms for integrated optical devices, their related optical chips and optical elements which find applications, for example, in the fields of optical communications and sensors. 

  • The coordinate system used in Clause 3 is described in Annex A. 
  • The symbols and units defined in detail in Clause 3 are listed in Annex B. 

Who is ISO 11807-1 for? 

ISO 11807-1 on integrated optics vocabulary is useful for: 

  • Manufacturers of integrated optical devices 
  • Retailers/suppliers of integrated optical devices 
  • Quality control personnel 

Why should you use ISO 11807-1 

Integrated optics is a complex field and therefore has a vast and complex vocabulary. These terms and definitions may sound similar but may mean something different entirely. Such confusion can cause loss of valuable time and money. 

The aim of ISO 11807-1 is to clarify the terms of the field of “integrated optics” and to define a unified vocabulary. This will minimise the risk of confusion between two parties and promote a better understanding of integrated optical devices, thereby increasing productivity. 

What’s changed since the last update?  

BS EN ISO 11807-1:2021 supersedes BS EN ISO 11807-1:2005. BS EN ISO 11807-1:2021 includes some technical changes concerning BS EN ISO 11807-1:2005. These include: 

  • Terminologies that have not been frequently used over the last 5 to 10 years are revised to those matching current trends. 
  • In the revision process, terminologies and definitions are compared to similar terminology definitions in IEC and harmonized.
