What is ISO/IEC TR 10036 about?

ISO/IEC TR 10036 document provides the glyph identifiers and glyph images registered and published by the registration authority for ISO/IEC 10036:1996.

ISO/IEC TR 10036 defines a method of naming glyphs and glyph collections, independent of any document encoding technique.

The International Standard ISO/IEC TR 10036 specifies the procedures to be followed by a Registration Authority in preparing, maintaining, and publishing registers of identifiers which identify font-related objects.

ISO/IEC TR 10036 provides a single point of contact for registration requests and for users to obtain information about the object registered (central registration within the registration authority's organization is not required, but a central point of contact is required).

Who is ISO/IEC TR 10036 for?

ISO/IEC TR 10036  on glyph identifiers and images for font information interchange is useful for:

  •   Registration authority of glyph identifiers
  •   Organization involved in font information interchange

Why should you use ISO/IEC TR 10036

In some applications and use-cases of font information interchange, especially among CJK (The Chinese, Japanese and Korean) script users, font producers or users need to make fine distinctions between presentation forms of the same character for use in different contexts. The purpose of ISO/IEC TR 10036 is to ensure the availability for archival purposes of glyph identifiers that have already been registered.

ISO/IEC TR 10036 provides you with structure of the glyph table which comprises of a list of glyph data blocks, each of which provides the description for a single glyph. Glyph table contains information that describes the glyphs in the font in the TrueType outline format. The glyph table displays the glyph identifier and the glyph image for that identifier.

What’s changed since the last update?

PD ISO/IEC TR 10036:2020 supersedes ISO/IEC 10036:1996. PD ISO/IEC TR 10036:2020 includes some technical changes with respect to ISO/IEC 10036:1996. These include:

  • Removal of the registration procedure specification due to the retirement of the registration authority
  • Inclusion of the glyph registry published by the former registration authority
