What is BS EN 17099 about?
BS EN 17099 specifies requirements for labels to be used on distribution units and logistic units for fishery and aquaculture products, ensuring uniform labels with human-readable text and bar codes using a common data set, thereby fulfilling EU Regulations, and facilitating traceability.
BS EN 17099 addresses the provision of traceability information only using labels, however other means can also be used to provide traceability information. When appropriate, it is allowed to label a lot containing a digitally readable alphanumeric code that is part of the identification number.
Note1: BS EN 17099 does not address the exchange of any information by means other than the use of labels.
Note2: BS EN 17099 does not cover requirements on the labelling or marking of consumer packaging.
Who is BS EN 17099 for?
BS EN 17099 on fishery and aquaculture products is relevant to:
- Operators of fishing vessels
- Fishery and aquaculture products manufacturers and processors
- Distribution units
- Logistics companies
- Entities related to packaging and labelling of fishery and aquaculture products
Why should you use BS EN 17099?
Standardized labels used on distribution units in the fishery and the aquaculture supply chain ensure labelling in both human-readable text and bar codes.
BS EN 17099 provide the requirements of data that need to be included to ensure the availability of correct information throughout the supply chain, both nationally and internationally.
BS EN 17099 guides in improving the quality and availability of traceable data and finding ways to facilitate the interoperability between systems. Improved traceability will make it more difficult to trade illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishery, and aquaculture products.
Overall, BS EN 17099 provides requirements on standardized labelling which help add value to fish and aquaculture products across the supply chain by retaining traceability information from catch to the consumer. Moreover, complying to standardised labelling guidelines will increase trust in the origin and overall quality of the product given its strict adherence to food safety and regulatory norms.
