What is BS EN 1171 - Cast iron gate valves about?

BS EN 1171 specifies the requirements for cast iron gate valves with flanged ends, socket ends, or spigot ends. BS EN 1171 is applicable to cast iron gate valves mainly used for industrial and general-purpose applications. However, they can be used for other applications provided the requirements of the relevant performance standards are met.

The range of nominal sizes covered is: DN 40 ; DN 50 ; DN 65 ; DN 80 ; DN 100 ; DN 125 ; DN 150 ; DN 200 ; DN 250 ; DN 300 ; DN 350 ; DN 400 ; DN 450 ; DN 500 ; DN 600 ; DN 700 ; DN 800 ; DN 900 ; DN 1 000.

The range of pressure designations covered is:

  • Isobaric PN 6; PN 10; PN 16; PN 25
  • Isomorphic, PS 10 bar to PS 1 bar at room temperature

Who is BS EN 1171 - Cast iron gate valves for?

BS EN 1171 on cast iron gate valves is useful for:

  • The commercial industry
  • The pulp and paper industry
  • Drainage systems
  • Controlling high-pressure water flow

Why should you use BS EN 1171 - Cast iron gate valves

Cast iron is a tough material that can withstand higher pressures than almost any other material. However, when a cast iron valve or pipe's rated pressure is exceeded, it might flex and shatter. Cast iron has virtually zero ductility, which means it is stiff and will break if bent. Cast Iron Gate Valves are used in commercial and industrial applications. Typical services include hot and cold water, HVAC, steam, gas, and other general utility services.  A gate valve is used to completely shut off fluid flow or, in the fully open position, provide full flow in a pipeline. Hence, it is used either in fully closed or fully open positions.

BS EN 1171 specifies the requirements, design, pressure/temperature ratings, and the functional characteristics of cast iron gate valves with flanged ends, socket ends or spigot ends. BS EN 1171 mentions test procedures to measure the capability of the cast-iron gate valves.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN 1171:2015 supersedes EN 1171:2002, which has been withdrawn. BS EN 1171:2015 includes some technical changes with respect to EN 1171:2002. These include:

  • The normative references were updated in Clause 2 and throughout the text
  • 4.1.1, 4.1.2.1, 4.1.2.3, 4.2.1, 8.1, Annex C and Table ZA.1 were revised to comply with EU Directive 97/23/EC (PED)
