What is BS EN 17314 about?
BS EN 17314 discusses operator restraint systems for Industrial trucks. BS EN 17314 specifies the tests for the verification of restraint systems against the risk of lateral ejection of the operator for:
- Counterbalanced lift trucks with center control, sit down and non-elevating operator position with a rated capacity up to and including 10 000 kg
- Tractors as defined in EN 12312-15 (airport ground equipment)
- Burden carriers (as defined in ISO 5053-1:2015, 3.25) with a maximum speed of more than 25 km/h with the seated operator
- Other types of industrial trucks equipped with such a restraint system
BS EN 17314 describes type tests for a specific combination of truck and restraint s systems.
Note1: BS EN 17314 does not cover:
- The risk due to frontal ejection
- The monitoring of the protective position of the operator restraint system as defined in EN 16307-1
- The testing of seat belts.
Note2: BS EN 17314 is not applicable for the retrofit of trucks with restraint systems.

Why should you use BS EN 17314 for ?
The crane industry has seen many fatalities due to insufficient fall protection for technicians who need to access facility cranes. Crane maintenance and inspections require workers to access overhead cranes systems in areas that can be dirty, narrow, and cramped, with little space to move.
BS EN 17314 has been prepared to provide one means of conforming to the essential safety requirements of the Machinery Directive and associated EFTA regulations.
BS EN 17314 provides a procedure for verifying the effectiveness and the robustness of operator restraint systems, other than lap-type seat belts, to protect truck operator(s) against the risk of lateral ejection from the protective structure during a lateral tip-over. The procedure can be used as a type test as well as an individual test. BS EN 17314 helps to ensure trust in the reliability of these operator restraint systems by demonstrating their safety and effectiveness, and ultimately the protection of the emergency teams who use them.
