What is BS EN 12604 about?
BS EN 12604 discusses mechanical requirements and test methods for manually operated doors, gates, and barriers intended for installation in areas in the reach of people and for which the main use is to provide safe access for goods and vehicles accompanied or driven by people in industrial, commercial or residential premises. BS EN 12604 is an international standard that provides design and performance for mechanical aspects of industrial, commercial, garage doors and gates that are used by vehicles accompanied or driven by people.
BS EN 12604 also defines manually operated vertically moving commercial doors such as rolling shutters and rolling grilles that are used in retail premises which are mainly for goods protection.
Note 1: Under BS EN 12604 lock gates and dock gates, railway barriers, doors on vehicles, doors intended for pedestrian use, and doors mainly used for the retention of animals unless they are at the site perimeter are not covered.
Note 2: BS EN 12604 only applies to doors that are not part of the load-carrying structure of the building.

BS EN 12604:2017+A1:2020 supersedes BS EN 12604:2017 which is withdrawn. The main changes with respect to the previous edition are:

- Revision of informative Annexes in accordance with Clause 4
- Limitation of the scope to manually operated doors
