What is ISO 16000‑28 about?
The ISO 16000 discusses indoor air. Odour emissions in building products could be indicative of airborne toxins. ISO 16000‑28 specifies a laboratory test method using test chambers defined in ISO 16000‑9 and further specified in EN 16516 and evaluation procedures for the determination of odours emitted from building products and materials.
Sampling, transport, and storage of materials under test, as well as preparation of test specimens, are described in ISO 16000‑11 and further specified in EN 16516.
Who is ISO 16000‑28 for?
ISO 16000‑28 on the determination of odour emissions from building products is useful for:
- Real estate developers
- Architects
- Civil engineers
- Interior designers
- Paint manufacturers
- Furnishing material manufacturers
- Estate caretakers/ facility managers
Why should you use ISO 16000‑28?
Odour evaluation is a complementary method to the chemical testing of emissions from building products and materials. It helps you identify the building materials odour emission. Materials with strong odour are undesirable to consumers as they ruin the ambience and can be harmful to the occupant.
ISO 16000‑28 guides you through the entire process of odour testing using a testing chamber. ISO 16000‑28 also informs you about the requirements for panel members who will provide you with the odour ratings. ISO 16000‑28 provides you with useful evaluations on the odour emission of building products and materials on indoor air quality. This information will help you to develop improved products that won’t emit a strong odour.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS ISO 16000‑28:2020 replaces ISO 16000‑28:2012, which has been technically revised. The main changes in BS ISO 16000‑28:2020 compared to ISO 16000‑28:2012 are as follows:
- Besides acceptability and perceived intensity, the hedonic tone is described as an odour characteristic
- A more detailed description of the comparative scale, including information on set-up, check-up and calibration devices
- Recommendation on panel sizes for the different testing procedures (acceptability, perceived intensity and hedonic tone)
- Procedure in case of failing the confidence interval
