What is ISO 18947-2 about?
ISO 18947-2 is the second part in a multi-series of International Standard which specifies tests to determine the abrasion resistance of photographic images which refer to individual prints or prints in albums produced by a wide range of printing technologies including dye sublimation and dye transfer processes for their typical use in indoor context that is characterized by mild abrasive conditions.
Note 1: Under ISO 18947-2 heavy duty abrasive conditions like floor tiles, floor graphics, abrasive cleaning and vehicle graphics are not covered.
Note 2: Under ISO 18947-2 testing procedures are limited to (quasi-) linear, reciprocal abrasion test devices.
Who is ISO 18947-2 for?
ISO 18947-2 on rub testing of photographic prints is relevant to:
- Manufacturers of abrasion test devices
- Developers of imaging materials and prints
- Print industry
Why should you use ISO 18947-2 ?
Printing technologies requires “photo-grade” media including coated or surface treated print materials to increase the photographic quality of photographic prints. Material factors that contribute to friction coefficients and therefore influence the susceptibility of printed images to abrasive conditions include surface roughness, surface elasticity, substrate porosity of samples and the chemical formulation, mobility as well as localization of the colorants on the surface or within a receiver layer.
BS ISO 18947-2 provides standardized requirements to evaluate and quantify the abrasion resistance of image prints in their various formats such as hard copy prints and photo books.
Test procedures under ISO 18947-2 help the user in determining the abrasion resistance of their photographic prints and improving it thus, increasing the image quality of photographic prints and avoiding degradation of physical print properties.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS ISO 18947-2:2021 together with BS ISO 189471:2021 supersedes BS ISO 18947:2013 which is withdrawn. The main changes are:
- Addition of visual evaluation
- Details of the test procedure have been refined
- Update in drawings of the test devices
