What is ISO/IEC 7816-8 about?
ISO/IEC 7816-8 is an international standard that deals with security of the identification cards.
ISO/IEC 7816-8 specifies interindustry commands which can be used for security operations. It also provides informative directives on how to construct security mechanisms with commands defined in ISO/IEC 78164.
ISO/IEC 7816-8 gives technical specifications such as terms, definitions, abbreviated terms, interindustry commands for security operations for implying the commands and mechanisms for security operations.
The choice and conditions of use of cryptographic mechanisms in security operations can affect card exportability.
Note: The evaluation of the suitability of algorithms and protocols is outside ISO/IEC 7816-8.
Who is ISO/IEC 7816-8 for?
ISO/IEC 7816-8 on integrated circuit cards is useful for:
- Credit and Debit card manufacturing companies
- Integrated circuit cards regulation authorities
- Banking & Retail
- Healthcare department
- ID Verification & Access Control companies
- Computer & Network Security department
- Mobile Communications manufacturer
Why should you use ISO/IEC 7816-8?
An integrated circuit card, or chip card, is a payment card that uses an embedded microchip to store data in addition to (or instead of) a traditional magnetic stripe. Integrated circuit cards are made of plastic or similar material and are most often associated with specific credit cards known as EMV or chip-&-pin credit and debit cards.
ISO/IEC 7816-8 specifying integrated circuit cards and the use of such cards for interchange. These cards are identification cards intended for information exchange negotiated between the outside world and the integrated circuit in the card. As a result of information exchange, the card delivers information computation results, stored data, and/or modifies its content data storage, event memorization.
ISO/IEC 7816-8 specifies access by close coupling, ISO/IEC 14443 all parts, and ISO/IEC 15693 all parts specify access by radio frequency. Such cards are also known as contactless cards.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS ISO/IEC 7816-8:2021 supersedes BS ISO/IEC 7816-8:2019, which is withdrawn. BS ISO/IEC 7816-8:2021 includes some technical changes with respect to BS ISO/IEC 78168:2019. These include:
- In Table A.9, A.10 and A.11, P1-P2 value of the mse command has been corrected
- In Table A.11, P1-P2 value of pso command with hash operation has been corrected
