What is PD IEC/TS 62896 – Hybrid insulators about?

PD IEC/TS 62896 is an international standard on hybrid insulators for power systems that specifies definitions, test methods to be performed on insulators.

PD IEC/TS 62896 applies to hybrid insulators for a.c. and d.c. applications consisting of a load-bearing insulating solid or hollow-core consisting of ceramic or glass, a housing made of polymeric material, and end fittings permanently attached to the insulating core.

Conforming to PD IEC/TS 62896, hybrid insulators intended for use as suspension/tension line insulators, line post insulators, station post insulators, and hollow-core insulators for apparatus.

Note: PD IEC/TS 62896 does not include requirements dealing with the choice of insulators for specific operating conditions.

Who is PD IEC/TS 62896 - Hybrid insulators for?

PD IEC/TS 62896 on hybrid insulators is useful for:

  • Manufacturers of string insulator units
  • Electrical engineers
  • Companies involved with power transmission and distribution lines
  • Testing laboratories
  • Quality control personnel
  • Organizations that design and maintain insulators

Why should you use PD IEC/TS 62896 - Hybrid insulators?

Hybrid insulators consist of an insulating core, bearing the mechanical load protected by a polymeric housing, the load being transmitted to the core by end fittings. Despite these common features, the materials used, and the construction details employed by different manufacturers may be quite different. The core is made of ceramic or glass material.

The object of this PD IEC/TS 62896 is to define the terms used, prescribe test methods, and prescribe acceptance criteria which helps to ensure a satisfactory lifetime under normally known stress conditions in service.

PD IEC/TS 62896 walks through the tests such as sample tests, routine tests, type tests, design tests. These tests help to eliminate hybrid insulators with manufacturing defects and to verify the suitability of the design, materials and method of manufacture (technology).

As a user of PD IEC/TS 62896, compliance with standardized guidelines for hybrid insulators can impart a high degree of consistency and uniformity in your production processes. This can further enhance credibility and reliability for your products and the end-use applications.
