What is BSI Flex 1887 about?

BSI Flex 1887 is the latest standard developed as part of our Connected and Automated Mobility (CAM) Standards programme, which supports the safe deployment of self-driving vehicles. It gives practical guidance on the human factors for organizations and operators developing and managing remote operation systems for connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) where a remote operator (RO) is not on board the vehicle. It focuses on ROs, operating CAVs on roads, who can assist or take over the dynamic driving task (DDT).

What does BSI Flex 1887 cover?

BSI Flex 1887 focuses on the human factors to be considered and addressed when implementing a remote operation capability, in particular:

  • The selection, role and training of an RO.
  • Assessing and maintaining the competence of an RO and/or team.
  • Guidelines for RO workstations and workstation environments.
  • RO management.

Why should you use BSI Flex 1887?

Key benefits of self-driving vehicles include the potential to improve safety and reduce the number of serious accidents, and significant economic growth if the technology gains widespread adoption.

To help the move towards to commercial deployment of automated vehicles, remote operators should be appropriately selected, trained, supported and provided with suitable workstations. BSI Flex 1887 provides guidance in these areas, enabling organizations to safely deploy connected and autonomous mobility systems.

The standard can help you to:

  • Accelerate innovation
  • Improve efficiency
  • Increase trust
  • Manage risk

Who is BSI Flex 1887 for?

This BSI Flex is developed for organizations implementing a remote operation capability or service. It might be of use to any organization that utilizes or develops remote operation systems.

It might also be of use to road authorities, local authorities, test beds, vehicle agencies and insurers.
