What is BS EN 50571 - Safety requirements for commercial electric washing machines about?

BS EN 50571 discusses households and similar electrical appliances. BS EN 50571 European Standard deals with the safety of electrical operated washing machines intended to be used by trained users in e.g. hotels, hospitals, factories, in light industry and on farms. BS EN 50571 also covers washing machines declared for commercial use in public areas and operated by lay persons e.g. in laundrettes, communal laundry rooms. Their rated voltage being not more than 250 V for single phase and 480 V for others. BS EN 50571 also covers washing machines making use of other energy sources.

BS EN 50571 does not cover requirements for these other energy sources or compressed air. However, the influence of these other energy sources on the machines is covered.
These washing machines are designed to be connected to hot and/or cold water supply.
Washing machines making use of steam or hot water for heating purposes are also within the scope of BS EN 50571. BS EN 50571 deals with the common hazards presented by washing machines that are encountered by all persons.

Note1: In general, BS EN 50571 does not take into account:

  • Persons (including children) whose:
  • Physical, sensory, or mental capabilities, or
  • Lack of experience and knowledge

Prevents them from using the washing machine safely without supervision or instruction

  • Children playing with the washing machine

Note2: BS EN 50571 European Standard does not apply to:

  • Industrial laundry machinery with a drum volume > 150 l (ISO 10472-2)
  • Washing machines intended to be used in locations where special conditions prevail, such as the presence of a corrosive or explosive atmosphere (dust, vapour, or gas)
