What is BS EN 13880-7 about? 

Stresses such as thermal, pressure, or moisture can cause cracks in asphalt or concrete pavements and roads. Sealing these cracks with joint sealant prevents further deterioration from intrusion of water or extraneous materials. Joint sealants are also used for joints between concrete pavements and on asphalt road shoulders. 

BS EN 13880-7 describes a function test for hot-applied joint sealants intended to be used in areas where the joints are subjected to combined conditions of temperature ≤ - 20 °C and crack joint movement ≤ 35 % in construction joints as well as in spontaneously formed cracks in road and airfield pavements.

Why should you use BS EN 13880-7?  

Hot-applied joint sealant applications include sealing expansion and contraction joints in concrete highways, joints between concrete pavements, asphaltic shoulders, and cracks in both cement concrete, and asphalt pavements. 

BS EN 13880-7 helps you to assess the damage to hot-applied sealants that result from fluctuating temperatures, water-spraying, and simultaneous dynamic loads. This test helps you to detect damage that can lead to water leakage, allowing you to take timely preventive measures.  

What’s changed since the last update? 

BS EN 13880-7:2019 supersedes EN 138807:2003 which has been withdrawn. BS EN 13880-7:2019 includes some technical changes with reference to EN 138807:2003. These include: 

  • Accuracy requirements of apparatus have been added 
  • A measurement device to measure the depth of failures has been added 
  • The conditioning procedure has been removed 
  • A procedure for sealant type N2 and F2 has been added
