What is BS EN IEC 62271-100 about?

BS EN IEC 62271-100 is applicable to three-phase AC circuit-breakers designed for indoor or outdoor installation and for operation at frequencies of 50 Hz and/or 60 Hz on systems having voltages above 1000 V.

Note 1: BS EN IEC 62271-100 includes only direct testing methods for making breaking tests.

Note 2: BS EN IEC 62271-100 does not apply to circuit-breakers with a closing mechanism for dependent manual operation

Note 3: BS EN IEC 62271-100 does not cover circuit-breakers intended for use on motive power units of electrical traction equipment

Note 4: BS EN IEC 62271-100 does not cover generator circuit-breakers installed between generator and step-up transformer

Note 5: BS EN IEC 62271-100 does not cover self-tripping circuit-breakers with tripping devices that cannot be made inoperative during testing.

Note 6: Tests to prove the performance under abnormal conditions that are not described in BS EN IEC 62271-100 are subject to agreement between manufacturer and user. Such abnormal conditions are, for example, cases where the voltage is higher than the rated voltage of the circuit-breaker, conditions which can occur due to sudden loss of load on long lines or cables.

Who is BS EN IEC 62271-100 for?

BS EN IEC 62271-100 on alternating current circuit-breakersis useful for:

  • Manufacturers of switchgear and controlgear/ circuit breakers
  • Electrical design engineers
  • Retailers and distributors of switchgear and controlgear/ circuit breakers
  • Suppliers and dealers of switchgear and controlgear/ circuit breakers
  • Service providers and installers for switch and controlgear/ circuit breakers

Why should you use BS EN IEC 62271-100?

Alternating current circuit breakers help you to cut off current supply from the source of power. This ensures protection to your devices against damages and hazards caused in case of high voltage current flows in. BS EN IEC 62271-100 harmonizes as far as practicable all rules and requirements of a general nature applicable to high-voltage switchgear and controlgear in order to obtain uniformity of requirements and tests throughout the corresponding range of equipment and to avoid the need for testing to different standards.BS EN IEC 62271-100 gives you the protection for the circuit-breakers from damaging by turning off the power when an overload is detected, and also protecting you from getting electric shocks. It also destroys the defective part and de-energise the equipment for maintenance and testing.

What’s changed since the last update?
