What is PD IEC/TR 62001-3 – High-voltage direct current systems about?

PD IEC/TR 62001-3 is an international standard and a part of the PD IEC/TR 62001 series that discusses the modelling for guidance to the specification and design evaluation of AC filters for High-voltage direct current (HVDC) systems. HVDC allows power transmission between AC transmission systems that are not synchronized.

PD IEC/TR 62001-3 provides guidance on the harmonic interaction across converters, pre-existing harmonics, AC network impedance modelling and simulation of AC filter performance. PD IEC/TR 62001-3 cover AC side filtering for the frequency range of interest in terms of harmonic distortion and audible frequency disturbances. It excludes filters designed to be effective in the PLC and radio interference spectra.

PD IEC/TR 62001-3 concerns the "conventional" AC filter technology and line-commutated high voltage direct current (HVDC) converters.

Who is PD IEC/TR 62001-3 – High-voltage direct current systems for?

PD IEC/TR 62001-3 on high-voltage direct current systems applies to:

  • Manufacturer of transmission systems
  • Electrical engineer

Why should you use PD IEC/TR 62001-3 – High-voltage direct current systems?

The modelling part addresses the harmonic interaction across converters, pre-existing harmonics, AC network impedance modelling, simulation of AC filter performance.

PD IEC/TR 62001-3 provides an interaction modelling where the magnitude of voltages and currents appear in any given interaction is a function of the coupling between the networks, impedances of the AC and DC networks at the respective frequencies as well as the magnitude of the driving force (or forces) which establishes the frequencies in the first place. As a user of PD IEC/TR 62001-3, you can ensure the modelling of High-voltage direct current systems.

What’s changed since the last update?

PD IEC/TR 62001-3:2016 supersedes PD IEC/TR 62001:2009, which is withdrawn. It includes:

  • Expanded and supplemented Clause 6 and accuracy of network component modelling at harmonic frequencies
  • New Clause 4 and new Clause 5
  • New annexes on the location of worst-case network impedance and further guidance for the measurement of harmonic voltage distortion
  • Project experience of pre-existing harmonic issues and worked examples showing the impact of pre-existing distortion
  • Comparison of calculation methods.
