What is BS EN 1829-1 about?
BS EN 1829-1 discusses about High-pressure water jet machines. BS EN 1829-1 contains safety-related requirements for high-pressure water jet machines with drives of all kinds (e.g., electric motor, internal combustion engine, air, and hydraulic) in which pumps are used to generate pressure.
BS EN 1829-1 deals with all significant hazards, hazardous situations, and events arising during assembly, erection, operation, and services relevant to high-pressure water jet machines when they are used as intended and under conditions of misuse which are foreseeable by the manufacturer.
Note 1: All references to high-pressure water jet machines within BS EN 1829-1 include machines for one or more of the following industrial applications:
- Cleaning
- Surface preparation
- Material removal
- Readjustment of concrete
- Cutting
Note 2: BS EN 1829-1 applies to mobile and fixed high pressure water jet machines, in which the water pressure is generated by a pressure generator/pump and in which the maximum allowable working pressure is more than the upper limit fixed.
Note 3: BS EN 1829-1 does not cover -
- Requirements of the pressure equipment directive 2014/68/EU
- Additional hazards due to the incorporation of high-pressure water jet machines into other process technology machines;
- Specific hazards associated with explosive atmospheres, use on ships or ambient temperatures outside the range 5 °C to 40 °C;
- Hazard due to the nature of liquids used for jetting, other than that due to pressure;
- Hazards associated with the drives or specific hazards due to any heat generation function. However, the hazards due to high temperatures of touchable surfaces are dealt with;
- High pressure water jet machines which are manufactured before the date of its publication as EN; hazards due to noise for what concerns the declaration of noise emission values in the instructions
Note 3: In some cases, specific parts can be in the scope of that directive, but their application is not dealt with in BS EN 1829-1.
Note 4: BS EN 1829-1 covered the machinery concerned and the extent to which hazards, hazardous situations, or hazardous events.
NOTE 5: Routine tests are described in informative Annex C.
Who is BS EN 1829-1 for?
BS EN 1829-1 on high-pressure water jet machines is applicable to:
- Machine manufacturers
- Health and safety bodies
- Machine users or employers
- Machine service providers
Why should you use BS EN 1829-1?
All user information necessary for the safe adjustment, starting up, use, shutting down, dealing with malfunction and maintenance of the high-pressure water jet machine
BS EN 1829-1 provides safety requirements for common hazards and risks include the water jet piercing the skin, being hit by flying debris, and exposure to noise. Other hazards associated with high-pressure water jetting include working in confined spaces, fall hazards, respiratory and eye hazards, electric shock, and potential exposure to hazardous chemicals.
BS EN 1829-1 provides measures to avoid hazards posed by the installation arrangement, e.g. hazards by noise or dangerous concentrations of substances in the atmosphere which are hazardous to health (e.g. exhaust gas), from improper use (e.g. explosive atmospheres).
BS EN 1829-1 provide safety requirements for the users of water jetting systems with guidance on safe operating practices to protect workers and other people who are near water jetting operations.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS EN 1829-1:2021 supersedes BS EN 1829‑1:2010, which is withdrawn.
The main changes compared with the BS EN 1829‑1:2010 are as follows:
- General revision according to the state of the art
- Revision of the vibration test code requirements
- Deletion of previous normative Annex A on noise test code, which has been replaced by normative annex on emission of vibration
- Addition of informative Annex B on vibration report and informative Annex C on routine testing
- Clarification of hydrostatic pressure testing
- Transfer of Clause 4 on the list of significant hazards to informative Annex D
