What is BS EN 438-5 - Flooring grade laminates about?

BS EN 438-5 is the fifth part of an international standard used for high-pressure decorative laminates (HPL) that classifies the characteristics of flooring grade laminates.

BS EN 438-5 applies to six classes of flooring grade laminates less than 2 mm thick produced by using a high-pressure process, intended for bonding to supporting substrates, to produce HPL flooring elements. For laminate floor covering applications, they meet the surface property requirements specified in EN 13329.

Note 1: The requirements in BS EN 438-5 apply only to the high-pressure laminate, and additional properties will need to be specified in order to define the functional performance of the finished flooring product.

Note 2: BS EN 438-5 applies only to decorative laminates as defined in Clause 3.

Note 3: BS EN 438-2 specifies the methods of test relevant to BS EN 438-5

Who is BS EN 438-5- Flooring grade laminates for?

BS EN 438-5 on high-pressure decorative laminates (HPL) is useful for:

  • Constructors of buildings
  • Architects
  • Interior designers
  • Civil engineers
  • Manufacturers of laminates

Why should you use BS EN 438-5 - Flooring grade laminates

Flooring grade laminates are useful in decorating surface materials. These flooring grade laminates are the most durable decorative laminate.

By using BS EN 438-5 you can classify the requirements used of flooring grade laminates which is useful in resisting abrasion. This ensures the sustainability of these laminates in different conditions.

By applying BS EN 438-5 you can produce better quality flooring grade laminates which are useful in maintaining good hygienic and anti-static properties for the end-users.
