What is BS EN 1048 - Forced convection air-cooled liquid cooler about?

BS EN 1048 is a European Standard that discusses heat exchangers. The purpose of the BS EN 1048 is to provide performance requirements that ensure air cooled liquid coolers are safe, reliable and effective for use.

BS EN 1048 applies to remotely forced convection air-cooled liquid coolers, within which no change in the liquid phase occurs.

BS EN 1048 does not apply to liquid coolers, designed primarily for installation within the machinery compartment of packaged products.

Note: BS EN 1048 does not cover technical safety aspects.

Who is BS EN 1048 - Forced convection air-cooled liquid cooler for?

BS EN 1048 on forced convection air-cooled liquid cooler is relevant to:

  • Manufacturers of heat exchangers
  • Manufacturers of forced convection air-cooled liquid cooler
  • Manufacturers of HVAC and refrigeration applications
  • Power plants
  • Chemical manufacturing industry
  • Petrochemical industry
  • Natural gas processing industry

Why should you use BS EN 1048 - Forced convection air-cooled liquid cooler?

Forced convection air-cooled liquid cooler is a self-contained system, that cools a single-phase liquid by rejecting sensible heat via a heat exchanger to air that is mechanically circulated by an integral fan.

The purpose of BS EN 1048 is to establish uniform methods to test and ascertain the following:

  • Product identification
  • Capacity
  • Air flow rate
  • Liquid side pressure drop
  • Energy requirements

BS EN 1048 provides best industry guidance on standard capacity, manufacturers data, the permissible uncertainty for various parameters, testing methods and equipment and the test procedure to demonstrate the performance of forced convection air-cooled liquid cooler. Capacity calculations are also covered in BS EN 1048.

Adopting BS EN 1048-compliant testing can thus demonstrate whether the forced convection air-cooled liquid cooler ensuring the cooling effect on the liquid passing though the dry cooler is adequate to be considered fit for purpose.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN 1048:2014 supersedes BS EN 1048:1999 which is withdrawn. BS EN 1048:2014 includes some technical changes with respect to BS EN 1048:1999. These include:

  • Clause 3 “Terms and definitions” is modified
  • The revised standard takes into account the current state of the art
