What is ISO 13606-5 about?
Electronic health record is used for purposes such as teaching, clinical audit, administration and reporting, service management, research and epidemiology.
ISO 13606 is a multipart series, discusses standards for electronic health record communication. ISO 13606-5 is an international standard that specifies the information architecture required for interoperable communications between electronic health record (EHR) systems and services that need or provide EHR data.
ISO 13606-5 defines three interfaces, as communication between an n EHR requester (wishing to and authorizing the communication of the artefact), an EHR provider (a repository service that contains and can return the requested artefact) and an EHR recipient who is intended and authorized to receive the artefact.
NOTE: ISO 13606-5 is not intended to specify the internal architecture or database design of EHR systems.
NOTE: ISO 13606-5 does not specify the information that different transport protocols will additionally require, nor the security or authentication procedures that might be agreed between the communicating parties or required by different jurisdictions.

Why should you use ISO 13606-5?
ISO 13606-5 defines the set of interactions to request each of these artefacts, and to provide the data to the requesting party or to decline the request. An interface to query an EHR or populations of EHRs, for example for clinical audit or research, are beyond its scope, although provision is made for certain selection criteria to be specified when requesting an EHR_EXTRACT which might also serve for population queries.
ISO 13606-5 provides you with the computational viewpoint for each interface, without specifying or restricting particular engineering approaches to implementing these as messages or as service interfaces. It specifies the interfaces as computational viewpoints, in order to support the wide range of engineering viewpoints that might be adopted by individual vendors or eHealth programmes.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS EN ISO 13606-5:2019 supersedes BS EN ISO 13606-5:2010. which has been technically revised. The main changes compared to the previous edition is: Removal of properties from the interface specifications that no longer correspond to properties in the Reference Model defined in ISO 13606‑1.
