What is ISO 28080 about?

ISO 28080 specifies a generic test method to determine the abrasion wear characteristics of hard metals. The test is appropriate for use in situations where test laboratories need to simulate abrasive damage. The procedure includes information that enables the test to be used in a variety of different conditions:

  • With counterface wheels of different stiffness (for example steel and rubber)
  • Wet and dry
  • Different abrasive sizes
  • Different chemical environments

Who is ISO 28080 for?

ISO 28080 on hardmetals abrasion tests for hard metals is relevant to:

  • Metal industries
  • Metallurgist
  • Metal testing laboratories and R&D

Why should you use ISO 28080?

Abrasion is the process of wear and tear of metal. It can be intentionally imposed in a controlled process using an abrasive.

ISO 28080 provides new and improved methods for testing the abrasion characteristics of hard metals using rotating-wheel systems. ISO 28080 provides the framework that brings together the key features of these tests and gives results that show comparability. ISO 28080 also gives information on their reproducibility and repeatability.

ISO 28080 provide guidance to user to reduce the abrasion in the metals and increase the abrasive wear resistance which results in manufacturing high-quality abrasive resistance metal products. This increases the service life of products and helps the producer to build consumer trust and confidence.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN ISO 28080:2021 supersedes BS ISO 28080:2011, which is withdrawn.

This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition (ISO 28080:2011), which has been technically revised.

The main changes compared to the previous edition are as follows:

  • The normative references have been updated;
  • Terms-definitions and principles have been switched
