What is PD IEC/TR 63065Line commutated converter about?

PD IEC/TR 63065 is an international standard that discusses the guidelines of line commutated converter (LCC). Line-commutated converters (LCCs) are the conventional, mature and well-established technology used to convert electric power from AC to DC or vice versa.

PD IEC/TR 63065 provides general guidance on basic principles and general proposals for the safe and economic operation and maintenance of an LCC converter station. These guidelines are based on the operation and maintenance practices that have been used successfully during the last decades at HVDC converter stations all over the world and can be referred to by new HVDC users to optimize operation and maintenance policy and assist in performing the operation and maintenance work.

PD IEC/TR 63065 focuses only on the operation and maintenance of the equipment inside an LCC converter station, including back-to-back HVDC systems.

Note: The operation and maintenance of HVDC overhead transmission lines, HVDC cables and voltage sourced converter (VSC) are not covered by PD IEC/TR 63065

Who is PD IEC/TR 63065Line commutated converter for?

PD IEC/TR 63065 on the line commutated converter applies to:

  • Manufacturing of HVDC stations
  • Quality check personnel

Why should you use PD IEC/TR 63065Line commutated converter?

An HVDC converter station is a specialised type of substation which forms the terminal equipment for a high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission line. Line-commutated converters (LCCs) are the conventional, mature and well-established technology used to convert electric power from AC to DC or vice versa. In a current source converter (CSC), the DC is kept constant with a small ripple using a large inductor.

PD IEC/TR 63065 provides you with the Availability, reliability, and flexibility for operation and maintenance that are closely related to the operational configuration of HVDC systems. It provides a maintenance programme in which the planned maintenance time for an HVDC system has changed from two weeks every year in the last decade to one week a year or even one week every four years recently. To make the best use of the limited time, a maintenance plan shall be carefully prepared.

PD IEC/TR 63065 helps you to build consumer trust and confidence in the product.
