What is BS EN IEC 60545 about?

BS EN IEC 60545 discusses hydraulic turbines, pump turbines and storage pumps. BS EN IEC 60545 establishes suitable procedures for commissioning and operating hydraulic machines and associated equipment.

Clear communication with your vendor is a key part of commissioning and operation of turbines and pumps. Individual suppliers may furnish appropriate information such as drawings, where required. Machines of over 15 MW and reference diameters of more than 3 m are generally covered by BS EN IEC 60545.

Note 1: The guidelines in BS EN IEC 60545 exclude matters of purely commercial interest, except those inextricably connected with the conduct of commissioning and operation.

Note 2: Commissioning and operation of the associated equipment are not described in detail in BS EN IEC 60545.

Note 3: The guidelines are not concerned with waterways, gates, drainage pumps, cooling-water equipment, generators, motor-generators, electrical equipment (e.g., circuit breakers, transformers) etc., except where they cannot be separated from the hydraulic machinery and its equipment.

Who is BS EN IEC 60545 for?

BS EN IEC 60545 on the commissioning and operation of turbines is useful for those entities who commission and use turbines and storage pumps. These include:

  • The energy sector
  • The agriculture sector
  • The manufacturing industry
  • Government bodies
  • Civil works projects

BS EN IEC 60545 is also applicable for manufacturers of the hydraulic turbines and pumps so that coordination and communication between the manufacturer and customer is facilitated.

Why should you use BS EN IEC 60545?

Hydraulic turbines and pumps are used because they can handle large loads easily. In order to commission the equipment, clear communication and specifications are necessary. BS EN IEC 60545 guides you to commission this hydraulic machinery in a manner that the end-product meets your requirement. BS EN IEC 60545 gives you advice and recommendations about (pre-) conditions, measurements, health and safety, and organization; when you are communicating your requirement to the manufacturer or vendor.

With such clear communication, the equipment is more likely to fulfil the requested characteristics for operation. BS EN IEC 60545 helps you to complete the commissioning procedure with the necessary care and coordination between the parties.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN IEC 60545:2021 supersedes BS 5671:1979. BS EN IEC 60545:2021 includes some technical and editorial changes with respect to BS 5671:1979. These include:

  • The focus is on the commissioning and operation of the hydraulic machine. Interfaces to the electric machines are mentioned only for a better understanding of the context
  • The definitions of tests for commissioning and adjustable speed are updated to the state of the art
  • The record sheets ‘measurements during erection’ are excluded
  • The maintenance is excluded
