What is ISO 26367-1- Environmental impact of fire effluents about?
ISO 26367 is an International Standard that discusses fire threat to people and environment. The aim of ISO 26367-1 is to provide a framework for a common treatment of the environmental impact of fires.
Note: ISO 26367-1 is not applicable to direct acute toxicity issues or wildland fires, which are covered by other existing ISO standards.

Large fires present dramatic and persistent adverse effects on the environment. These concerns have been brought to the forefront by the significant number of high-impact incidents witnessed over the past half-century.
ISO 26367-1 is intended to serve as a tool for the development of standard protocols for:
- The assessment of local and remote adverse environmental impacts of fires, and the definition of appropriate preventive measures
- Post-fire analyses to identify the nature and extent of the adverse environmental impacts of fires
- The collection of relevant data for use in environmental fire hazard assessments
ISO 26367-1 is intended as an umbrella document to set the scene concerning what should be considered when determining the environmental impact of fires.
ISO 26367-1 provides the environmental impact of firefighting intervention based on the four stages of fire- incipient, growth, fully-developed and decay.
As a result, ISO 26367-1 can be your one-stop guide in establishing best industry practices for intervention so as to minimise environmental risk of fire with the right steps for prevention, detection, containment and mitigation.
