What is BS EN IEC 631321 about?

BS EN IEC 631321 is an international standard that includes general aspects for installation procedures and tolerances of hydroelectric machines.

BS EN IEC 631321 gives suitable procedures and tolerances for the installation of hydroelectric machines such as turbines and generators. It presents a typical assembly and many possible ways to assemble a unit. The size of the machines, design of the machines, the layout of the powerhouse, and delivery schedule of the components are some of the elements that could result in additional steps, the elimination of some steps, and/or assembly sequences.

Note 1: BS EN IEC 631321 excludes matters of purely commercial interest, except those inextricably bound up with the conduct of installation.

Note 2: The tolerances in BS EN IEC 631321 have been established upon best practices and experience, although it is recognized that other standards specify different tolerances.

Note 3: Installations for refurbishment projects or for small hydro projects are not in the scope of BS EN IEC 631321.

Who is BS EN IEC 631321 for?

BS EN IEC 631321 on hydroelectric machines is useful for:

  • Manufacturers and suppliers of hydroelectric machines
  • Dealers and importers of hydroelectric machines
  • Testing houses/ service providers for hydroelectric machines
  • Developers and designers of hydroelectric machines

Why should you use BS EN IEC 631321?

Hydroelectric power is a huge source of renewable electrical energy worldwide. A turbine converts the kinetic energy of falling water into mechanical energy. After that, a generator converts the mechanical energy from the turbine into electrical energy.

BS EN IEC 631321 gives you terms, definitions, concept such as reference centre, best centre, reference horizontal plane, reference vertical plane, best fit plane, etc., for installation hydroelectric machines in the hydroelectric power plant.

Users of BS EN IEC 631321, can get the detailed information about axis of rotation, junction, elevation, orientation in plan, guide vane top clearance, guide vane bottom clearance, which help you to examine and test the aspects according to the global standards, to ensure safety while installation of hydroelectric machines like turbines and generators.
