What is BS EN 17334 about?
BS EN 17334 specifies test methods for the determination of the suitability of two-component epoxy and two-component polyurethane adhesives for glued-in steel rods in glued laminated timber (GLT) and glued solid timber (GST) according to EN 14080, cross-laminated timber (CLT) according to EN 16351 and laminated veneer lumber (LVL) according to EN 14374.
NOTE: The English term “glued-in rods” has been chosen as the established term instead of “bonded-in rods”.
NOTE: This document does not cover:
- The performance of adhesives for on-site glueing (except for factory-like conditions).
- Glued-in rods in modified and stabilized wood with considerably reduced swelling and shrinkage properties, e.g. acetylated wood, heat-treated wood, polymer impregnated wood and preservative-treated wood.
NOTE: Factory like conditions provide shelter from direct weathering and dirt, prevent undue movement of the joints during curing of the adhesive and provide temperature and relative humidity conditions and control as in a factory production environment.
NOTE: This document also covers glued-in rods in surface-treated wood.
NOTE: Several provisions of this document can apply to in situ repair and upgrading of existing timber structures including (cracked/fissured) solid wood beams. For adhesives for glued-in rods used in on-site repair or applications with solid timber additional provisions apply, e.g. related to rheology and site temperature conditions. Such provisions are not part of this document.

Why should you use BS EN 17334?
Glued-in rods are useful in producing stiff, and high-capacity connections in timber structures. These glued in rods has been used for almost 30 years for in-suit repairs and strengthening of structures, as well as for new construction works.
The glue line or thickness of the glue line is used for delamination resistance. Hence this glue line is applied to the timber structure. BS EN 17334 helps to determine the characteristics of bond strength value by conducting bond shear strength tests on wood products. In the case of non-bonded-layers, BS EN 17334 helps to prevent adhesive leakage through unbonded edges. BS EN 17334 ensures that there are no defects in the bonding of Glued-in rods, the specimen have to be split in the zone of the glued-in rod after conducting tests.
BS EN 17334 specifies the performance requirements and the characteristics of bond strength value for such adhesiveness of joints between load-bearing timber products and steel rods. The purpose of BS EN 17334 is to produce joints of such strength and durability that the integrity of the bond in the glued-in rod is maintained throughout the lifetime of the structure.
