BS EN 16323 harmonizes and defines general terms in the field of the collection, transport, treatment, discharge (and reuse) of wastewater and in the field of sludge treatment, utilization and disposal.
BS EN 16323 provides the general basis for the terms and definitions in the preparation or revision of all standards within the field of wastewater engineering.

Why should you use BS EN 16323 - Glossary of wastewater engineering terms?
The aim of BS EN 16323 is to harmonize all terminology of CEN standards within its scope which could lead to misunderstandings and miscommunications. This is the first step toward communities where terms are unambiguous and where there is a common terminology in computer systems. Because of this:
- It is not the intention to take on board all possible terminology from all international standards or complementary terminology from national standards
- New terminology and terminology from ISO standards have only been added to improve understanding of the terminology from CEN standards
- Conflicting terminology and inconsistencies in existing (translated) standards have been harmonized up to July 2012
- It is not intended for use in legal contracts
As a consequence of the aim, the terminology has been altered where appropriate as follows:
- One term for one definition, others are deprecated
- Definitions have been made as general and short as possible
- The descriptions are from a functional point of view and not including requirements
For clarification purposes, some (new) definitions for terms within definitions and explanatory figures have been added. Sometimes it is not possible to have one definition for one term, looking from different points of view. Especially it was difficult to compare terminology used in political/governmental directives to the ones used in technical standards. Only if a (derived) general definition is not clear enough, the more detailed definition has been retained in the glossary. The three official languages of CEN are used. The first column of Clause 2 contains information in regard to the terminology. For every term it contains:
- The reference number
- An indication of the typological group, where it is classified
