What is BS EN 1279-5 - Insulating glass units - Product standard about?
BS EN 1279‑5 is part five of a multi-series of European standards on insulating glass units in buildings that covers its product standards.
BS EN 1279‑5 covers the product standard of insulating glass units (IGU) for use in buildings.
Note 1: Units for which the intended use is only artistic and therefore no essential characteristics are required are not subject to CE marking and are not part of BS EN 1279-5.
Note 2: For glass products with electrical wiring or connections for, e.g. alarm or heating purposes, other directives, e.g. Low Voltage Directive, may apply.
Who is BS EN 1279-5 - Insulating glass units - Product standard for?
BS EN 1279-5 on insulating glass units - product standard is useful for:
- Insulating glass unit manufacturers
Why should you use BS EN 1279-5 - Insulating glass units - Product standard?
Insulated Glass combines two or more glass panes that are spaced apart and sealed with a sealant to appear as a single unit. Also called double glazing, IGUs are designed to reduce heat loss and solar heat gain entering the building, while reducing visible light transmittance. Hence, they improve the thermal performance, and reduce energy costs. They can be fabricated to meet sound control requirements, seismic requirements, bullet resistance, hurricane and blast resistance requirements, impact resistance and state energy codes.
A Product Standard is a precisely defined and documented set of functionality to which products can be registered as conformant under the Open Brand Program.
With the use of BS EN 1279‑5 which covers the product standard of insulating glass units (IGU) for use in buildings you can increase the efficiency in your organization.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS EN 1279-5:2018 supersedes BS EN 1279-5:2005+A2:2010, which is withdrawn.
BS EN 1279-5:2018 includes some technical changes with respect to BS EN 1279-5:2005+A2:2010. These are:
- The standard has been revised to fulfil the requirements of the Regulation (EU) No 305/2011 (Construction Product Regulation), modified by Regulations (EU) No 157/2014, (EU) No 568/2014 and (EU) No 574/2014
- Requirements for insulating glass units for use in bonded glazing systems are given, “bonded glazing” is sometimes called “structural sealant glazing”
- The solar factor, g, is listed within the spectrophotometric characteristics to be declared in the Declaration of Performances (DoP)
- The durability/conformity assessment is listed within the characteristics to be declared in the DoP
- The mechanical resistance shall be given in the DoP by the characteristic bending strength of the glass components
