What is BS EN 1096-3 - Coated glass - Requirements and test methods about?  

BS EN 1096-3 is a European standard that specifies requirements and a test method related to resistance to solar radiation for coated glass for use in buildings. 

BS EN 1096-3 is aimed at evaluating if the exposure to solar radiation over an extended period of time produces any appreciable change in light transmittance and solar transmittance of the coated glass as well as a reduction of the infrared reflectance in the case of low emissivity coatings. 

BS EN 1096-3 applies to Class C and D coatings as defined in EN 1096-1 and used in insulating 

glass units.

Why should you use BS EN 1096-3 - Coated glass - Requirements and test methods 

Coated glass is an industrial glass product onto which metal oxides are sprayed in the form of thin coatings (0.01 µm to 0.8 µm). The coating is thus composed of a stack of sub-coatings of several types and thicknesses. It modifies the behavior of the glass with respect to solar radiation, in the visible and infrared domains. 

In addition to the ultraviolet radiation reduction, coated glass offers several other benefits, including higher levels of comfort – low-e glass coatings reduce radiant heat. Potential savings on your energy bills – low-e glass coatings reduce reliance on heating and cooling systems. 

BS EN 1096-3 specifies requirements and test methods for class C and D glass coatings to protect the surface from dirt, dust, and other contaminants. Hence, cleaning becomes a lot easier due to this. Glass coating also improves scratch resistance by up to ten times that of non-coated materials. 

BS EN 1096-3 specifies requirements and a test method related to resistance to solar radiation for coated glass for use in buildings to reduce or increase ultraviolet solar transmittance, visible solar transmittance, solar transmittance, solar material protection factor, solar skin protection factor, external visible solar reflectance, internal visible solar reflectance, solar reflectance, solar absorbance, emissivity, solar factor, and colour rendering factor. By using BS EN 1096-3:2012 for coated glass for use in buildings evaluate if the exposure to solar radiation for coated glass for use in buildings, as per requirement. 

What is changed since the last update?  

BS EN 1096-3:2012 supersedes BS EN 1096-3:2001 which is withdrawn.  

BS EN 1096-3:2012 includes some technical changes with respect to BS EN 1096-3:2001 

These include: 

  • Reference to the future EN 1096-5, Test method and classification for the Self-cleaning performances of coated glass surfaces 
  • The introduction of a method to deal with toughenable / heat strength enable and to be toughened / to be heat strengthened coated glass, see Annex A
