What is ISO 11058 - Water permeability in geotextiles about?

Geotextiles are fabrics used in geotechnical applications, such as road and railway embankments, earth dikes, and coastal protection structures, designed to perform basic functions such as filtration, drainage, separation of soil layers, reinforcement, or stabilization.

ISO 11058 specifies two test methods for determining the water permeability characteristics of a single layer of geotextile or geotextile-related product normal to the plane:

  • The constant head method
  • The falling head method

Who is ISO 11058 - Water permeability in geotextiles for?

ISO 11058 on the determination of water permeability in geotextiles is useful for:

  • Manufacturers of geotextiles and geotextile-related products
  • Geotextile testing laboratories / researchers
  • Quality control personnel
  • Product development teams / design engineers

Why should you use ISO 11058 Water permeability in geotextiles

Geotextiles are permeable fabrics, usually used in association with soil. They have the ability to separate, filter, reinforce, protect, or drain. Geotextiles are usually made from polypropylene or polyester.

The geotextile filter prevents the movement of the base soil fine particles, allowing the liquid to flow as freely as possible. Geotextiles are required to meet important objectives: permeability, retention, and anti-clogging capabilities. ISO 11058 specifies the laboratory tests of water permeability characteristics normal to the plane without loads.

The hydraulic properties of nonwoven geotextile decreased under load, even 4 times for tested materials. For that reason, it is very important to take this relationship into account in the design process to avoid serious consequences in geo-environmental and geotechnical work.
