What is ISO 22282-3-Guidance on water pressure tests in rocks about?

ISO 22282 is an international standard that discusses geotechnical investigation and testing.

ISO 22282-3 is the third part of the series that specifies the requirements for water pressures tests (WPT) carried out in boreholes drilled into the rock as part of geotechnical investigation and testing according to EN 1997-1 and EN 1997-2.

The tests are used to investigate the following:

  • Hydraulic properties of the rock mass, which are mainly governed by discontinuities
  • Absorption capacity of the rock mass
  • Tightness of the rock mass
  • Effectiveness of grouting
  • Geomechanical behavior, e.g. hydrofracturing, hydro jacking

Who is ISO 22282-3- Guidance on water pressure tests in rocks for?

ISO 22282-3 on geohydraulic testing is useful for:

  • Geotechnical investigation and testing
  • Geotechnical contractors and consultants
  • Hydrogeologists
  • Civil engineers
  • Geotechnical engineers

Why should you use ISO 22282-3- Guidance on water pressure tests in rocks

Geotechnical testing is carried out by geotechnical engineers, geotechnical technicians, or engineering geologists to determine the features of a worksite, such as the physical attributes.

The different purposes of geohydraulic testing are to obtain information on the permeability of soil or rock in natural or treated states, transmissivity and storage coefficient, and hydrodynamic parameters of aquifers.

Many effects of the geohydraulic tests are not only influenced by the ground itself, but stem from the testing procedure. Historically, the water pressure test was evaluated based on the assumption that the stationary behaviour was achieved. Recent advances in geohydraulics have shown that transient phenomena are often present. ISO 22282-3 attempts to address the limitations of certain testing procedures without restricting the required equipment too stringently.

Water pressure tests in rock as part of geotechnical investigation and testing in accordance with ISO 22282-3 is a useful means for characterizing rock formations for efficient grouting procedures and for evaluating seepage potential. These indications are important to ensure the structural integrity of your civil engineering projects is maintained.
