What is BS EN ISO 21920-2:2022 about?

A new international standard, BS EN ISO 21920-2:2022 gives updated terms, definitions and parameters for surface texture requirements used on engineering drawings and CAD models. It replaces a number of standards that have been the main surface texture standards since the late 1990s (see below) and is being published as part of a package of new and revised surface texture standards, which also includes:

  • BS EN ISO 21920-1:2022, Geometrical product specifications (GPS) — Surface texture: Profile — Part 1: Indication of surface texture
  • BS EN ISO 21920-3:2022, Geometrical product specifications (GPS) — Surface texture: Profile — Part 3: Specification operators
  • BS EN ISO 25178-2:2022, Surface texture: Areal — Part 2: Terms, definitions and surface texture parameters
  • BS EN ISO 12179:2022, Surface texture: Profile method — Calibration of contact (stylus) instruments

Who is BS EN ISO 21920-1:2022 for?

  • Mechanical engineers, design engineers and engineering designers in aerospace, defence, automotive, rail, nuclear and medical devices sectors
  • Any engineering or manufacturing organizations that need to produce engineering drawings (using 2D manual drawings or 3D CAD-generated models) in their product design and development processes
  • Manufacturing and production engineers, and metrologists and quality control teams who measure and verify that specifications have been met
  • Independent design consultancies and design agencies
  • Users of the former national standard BS 308

What does BS EN ISO 21920-2:2022 cover?

It specifies terms, definitions and parameters for the determination of surface texture by profile methods.

Why should you use BS EN ISO 21920-2:2022?

It helps companies indicate surface texture requirements unequivocally on drawings and CAD models. It can also help users to:

  • Implement a new, modern approach to the indication of surface texture requirements on mechanical engineering drawings and CAD models
  • Move away from traditional, outdated practices
  • Enter new markets
  • Increase confidence in their work product

BS EN ISO 21920-2:2022 contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goal 9 on industry, innovation and infrastructure.

What’s new about BS EN ISO 21920-2:2022?

This is a brand-new standard that replaces BS EN ISO 4287:1998, BS EN ISO 12085:1997, BS EN ISO 13565-2:1998 and BS ISO 13565-3:2000. The changes introduced in BS EN ISO 21920-2:2022 include:

a) All field parameters are now related to the evaluation length
b) Unambiguous evaluation of profile elements
c) Definition of new parameters, in particular parameters based on the watershed transformation
