What is ISO 286-2 - Geometrical product specifications about?
ISO 286-2 is the second part of the ISO 286 multi-series that discusses geometrical product specifications.
ISO 286-2 gives values of the limit deviations for commonly used tolerance classes for holes and shafts calculated from the tables given in ISO 286-1. ISO 286-2 covers values for the upper limit deviations ES (for holes) and es (for shafts), and the lower limit deviations EI (for holes) and ei (for shafts).
The ISO system for tolerances on linear size provides a system of tolerances and deviations suitable for features of the following types:
- Cylinders
- Two parallel opposite surfaces
For simplicity, and also because of the importance of cylindrical workpieces of circular section, only these are referred to explicitly. It should be clearly understood, however, that the tolerances and deviations given in ISO 286-2 equally apply to workpieces other than circular sections.
Who is ISO 286-2 - Geometrical product specifications for?
ISO 286-2 on geometrical product specifications is useful for:
- Assembly engineers
- Quality control personnel
- Production managers
Why should you use ISO 286-2- Geometrical product specifications?
The need for limits and fits for machined workpieces was brought about mainly by the requirement for interchangeability between mass-produced parts and inherent inaccuracy of manufacturing methods, coupled with the fact that “exactness” of size was found to be unnecessary for most workpiece features.
ISO 286-2 provides you with dimensions and tolerances for holes and shafts in workpieces, thereby helping you to reduce the cost of production and ensure that workpieces have a sufficient engineering fit.
