What is BS ISO 8062-4:2023 about?

This is the latest revision of one of the main technical parts of the ISO 8062 series on Geometrical Product Specification (GPS). The series covers moulded parts and deals specifically with tolerances and allowances for castings. BS EN ISO 8062-4:2023 defines a system of tolerance grades, including general geometrical tolerances using surface profile tolerances, and how to show them.

Who is BS ISO 8062-4:2023 for?

  • mechanical engineers, design engineers, engineering designers, manufacturing engineers and production engineers who work in the aerospace, defence, automotive, rail, nuclear, and medical devices

  • engineering or manufacturing organizations that produce castings as part of their manufacturing and development processes.

What does BS ISO 8062-4:2023 cover?

It specifies the rules for geometrical dimensioning and tolerancing of final moulded parts and parts machined out of moulded parts. It also specifies rules and conventions for the indications of these requirements in technical product documentation and specifies the proportions and dimensions of the graphical symbols to be used.

    BS ISO 8062-4 also:

    • provides symbols for identifying the relative completeness of the moulded features and parts

    • specifies general geometrical tolerances using surface profile tolerances

    • specifies machining allowances and draft angles (tapers)

    • establishes the general principles for presentation of general geometrical tolerances.

Why should you use BS ISO 8062-4:2023?

      • It provides a clear, consistent approach for general tolerances for castings using profile tolerancing in a general datum system.

      • It helps users specify unambiguously and manufacture more accurate products.

      • It can help users enter new markets and increase confidence in products.

      • BS ISO 8062-4:2023 has been updated to clarify the approach for users.

What’s new about BS ISO 8062-4:2023?

This is a revision of BS ISO 8062-4:2017 which is replaced and superseded. The major changes in BS ISO 8062-4:2023 are:

      1. overall clarification regarding better applicability according to the ISO GPS system (ISO/TC 213’s system of standards)
      2. overall revision of tables and figures for plausibility
      3. new symbols for draft angles with symmetrical/unsymmetrical tolerance zones, as already included in the model geometry or drawing outlines, have been added
      4. requirements for the indication in the product definition (new Clauses 5, 6 and 7) and types of specifications (new Clause 8) have been added
      5. Rule I concerning the wall thickness has been added
      6. Clause 9 and Annex G have been added, expanding the information previously given in former Annex A (to provide examples of using general tolerances)
      7. new Annexes A, B and C have been added – Annex A (Proportions and dimensions of graphical symbols), Annex B (Proposed process for general tolerancing castings), and Annex C (Examples for the multiple tolerancing method).
