ISO 5209 discusses general-purpose industrial valves. A valve is a device or natural object that regulates, directs, or controls the flow of a fluid (gases, liquids, fluidized solids, or slurries) by opening, closing, or partially obstructing various passageways. ISO 5209 specifies the requirements for the mandatory and optional markings of general-purpose industrial valves. ISO 5209 defines the method of applying the markings, on the body, on a flange, on an identification plate or any other location. ISO 5209 is considered in conjunction with the specified requirements of the valve product standards or valve performance standards.
Note: The marking requirements for plastic valves are not within the scope of ISO 5209.

Why should you use ISO 5209 - General purpose industrial valves?
Valves are technically fittings but are usually discussed as a separate category. In an open valve, fluid flows in a direction from higher pressure to lower pressure. The purpose of ISO 5209 is to establish some basic requirements for the marking of valves and to provide recommendations for additional markings. ISO 5209 is to be considered in conjunction with the requirements of International Standards applicable to specific types of valves or specific requirements agreed between the manufacturer and the customer.
Markings on the body or bonnet/cover are integral with the body (e.g., cast, forged or stamped or laser-marked) or it is on a marking plate securely fixed to the body (plate which is distinct from the identification plate). The material of this plate and the method of fixing it to the body is at the discretion of the manufacturer unless otherwise specified in product or performance standards. All marking plates and identification plates and their means of fixing are in a material that is resistant to atmospheric corrosion. Marking plates are also suitable for the allowable temperature of the valve. Using ISO 5209 you can specify the requirements for the mandatory and optional markings of general-purpose industrial valves.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS ISO 5209:2019 supersedes ISO 5209:1977. BS ISO 5209:2019 includes some technical changes with respect to ISO 5209:1977. These include:
- The structure has been aligned with the current Directives, Part 2
- Clause 4 has been updated to give the requirements for mandatory, supplementary, and other markings
- In Table 1, item 20 "Allowable differential pressure", item 21 "Closing direction" and columns 3 to 5 have been added
- A new Clause 5 has been created to give details of marking
