What is ISO 787-17- Pigments and extenders about ?

ISO 787 discusses general methods of test for pigments and extenders. ISO 787-17 belongs to ISO 787 multi-series and discusses comparison of lightening power of white pigments.

ISO 787-17 specifies a general method of test for comparing the lightening (reducing) power of a white pigment with the lightening power of an agreed sample of the same type.

Who is ISO 787-17Pigments and extenders for ?

ISO 787-17 on general methods of test for pigments and extenders is useful for:

  • Paint and Colour Manufacturers
  • Quality control personnel

Why should you use ISO 787-17Pigments and extenders ?

An extender pigment is a naturally occurring chemical substance (usually having a white color) that is added to paint or coating to improve its properties such as durability, cost, and resistance to corrosion or wear.

ISO 787-17 provides you with two procedures A and B. Procedure A is quicker than procedure B and is suitable for testing one sample of pigment; procedure B is better for testing several samples, especially if a pigment of unknown lightning power is being tested. ISO 787-17 helps you with the paint formulation and helps you in getting to good light colours.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN ISO 787-17:2019 supersedes BS EN ISO 78717:2017. BS EN ISO 787-17:2019 includes some technical changes with respect to BS EN ISO 78717:2017. These include:

  • Clause 3 “Terms and definitions”, with a general reference to ISO 18451-1, has been added
  • CAS numbers have been added to the reagents
  • The text has been editorially revised
