What is BS EN 124051 about?

BS EN 124051 discusses gas meters. Gas meters need to provide accurate readings of gas usage. The readings of gas meters depend on the electronic conversion devices that are used in the meters.

BS EN 124051 specifies the requirements and tests for the construction, performance, safety, and conformity of gas-volume electronic conversion devices associated with gas meters used to measure volumes of fuel gases of the first and second families according to EN 437.

Note 1: BS EN 124051 is not relevant to temperature conversion integrated into gas meters which only indicate the converted volume.

Who is BS EN 124051 for?

BS EN 124051 on gas meters is useful for:

  • The petrochemical industry
  • Meter manufacturers and suppliers
  • Product design engineers

Why should you use BS EN 124051?

Gas meters are required to register the volume of gas consumed within an acceptable degree of accuracy. Any significant error in the registered volume can represent a loss to the gas supplier, or the consumer being overbilled. BS EN 124051 is intended for type testing, which will help you avoid these issues.

BS EN 124051 provides you with three kinds of conversion; conversion as a function of temperature only (called T conversion); conversion as a function of the pressure and of the temperature with constant compression factor (called PT conversion); conversion as a function of the pressure, the temperature, and considering the compression factor (called PTZ conversion).

BS EN 124051 helps you to understand the entire assembling and testing procedures for gas meter components. This will enable you to take design and manufacturing decisions based on data.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN 124051:2021 supersedes BS EN 124051:2018, which is withdrawn. BS EN 124051:2021 includes some technical changes with respect to BS EN 124051:2018. These include:

  • New table for relevant tests for the conversion device
  • Reference added to natural gas according to EN 16726 and biomethane according to EN 16723-1
  • Additional information on the service life of the battery
  • Modification of parameters during installation and adjustment in the factory or on-site
  • New optional functionality Error curve correction of a gas meter
