What is ISO 14245 about?

ISO 14245 covers the function of LPG cylinder valves. A gas cylinder is a pressure vessel for the storage and containment of gases at above atmospheric pressure. ISO 14245 specifies the requirements for design, specification, type testing production testing and inspection for dedicated low pressure liquefied (LPG) self-closing cylinder valves for use with and directly connected to transportable refillable LPG cylinders. ISO 14245 also includes requirements for associated equipment for vapour and liquid service.

Pressure values given in ISO 14245 are given as gauge pressure. Cylinder valves complying with ISO 14245 can be expected to perform satisfactorily under normal service conditions.   ISO 14245 also covers requirements for product testing and inspection.

Note 1: Bursting discs and/or fusible plugs are not covered in ISO 14245

Note 2: ISO 14245 excludes other LPG cylinder devices which are not an integral part of the dedicated self-closing cylinder valve.

Note 3: ISO 14245 does not apply to cylinder valves for fixed automotive installations and ball valves.

Who is ISO 14245 for?

ISO 14245 on gas cylinders is useful for:

  • Manufacturers and suppliers of gas cylinders and gas cylinders valves
  • Powering industrial ovens sectors
  • Inspection bodies that include inspection of gas cylinders in their service
  • Commercial and industrial sectors
  • Quality control personnel
  • Research and development facilities

Why should you use ISO 14245?

Gas cylinder valves are designed to withstand mechanical impact without needing additional protection, they need to comply with the highest quality standards and regulations. ISO 14245 provides you with all performance and design requirements for LPG cylinders valves which ensure the correct functioning and fitting of valve cap and plugs of LPG cylinders and checks for other detects in the cylindrical valve prior to dispatch on storage.

Gas cylinders valves need to be manufactured from compatible materials. ISO 14245 helps you to select an appropriate material for valve components with adequate strength in service, but also to consider other modes of failure due to atmospheric corrosion, brass dezincification, stress corrosion, shock loads, and material failure.

ISO 14245 provides you with test procedures and test requirements for testing of gas cylinder valves including operation test, excess flow valve test, external and internal leak tightness test, endurance test, hydraulic pressure test.

The valve operating mechanism included in ISO 14245 elaborates the mechanism of the valve designed in such a way that it remains captive and achieves direct contact with the valve body in the absence of the sealing element, in order to limit the leakage rate of gas and shall satisfy the self-closing requirement of the ISO 14245. Using ISO 14245 you can specify the requirements for design, specification, type testing production testing and inspection for dedicated low pressure liquefied (LPG) self-closing cylinder valves.
