What is ISO 98091 - Gas cylinders about?

ISO 9809 is a series on gas cylinders. A gas cylinder is a pressure vessel for the storage and containment of gases at above atmospheric pressure. ISO 98091 specifies minimum requirements for the material, design, construction and workmanship, manufacturing processes, examination and testing at the time of manufacture for refillable seamless steel gas cylinders and tubes with water capacities up to and including 450 l.

ISO 98091 is applicable to cylinders and tubes for compressed, liquefied, and dissolved gases and for quenched and tempered steel cylinders and tubes with a maximum actual tensile strength Rma of less than 1 100 MPa.

Who is ISO 98091 - Gas cylinders for?

ISO 98091 on gas cylinders is useful for:

  • Gas cylinder manufacturers
  • Tubes manufacturers
  • Design engineers
  • Quality control personnel

Why should you use ISO 98091 - Gas cylinders

Inside the cylinder the stored contents may be in a state of compressed gas, vapour over liquid, supercritical fluids, or dissolved in a substrate material, depending on the physical characteristics of the contents. ISO 98091 provides a specification for the design, manufacture, inspection and testing of a seamless steel cylinder and tube. The objective of ISO 98091 is to balance design and economic efficiency against international acceptance and universal utility.

ISO 98091 aims to eliminate existing concerns about climate, duplicate inspections, and restrictions because of a lack of definitive International Standards.

Materials for the manufacture of gas cylinders fall within categories that are internationally recognized cylinder steels, nationally recognized cylinder steels and new cylinder steels resulting from technical progress. ISO 98091 discusses two typical internationally recognized steel types which have provided safe performance over many years that are chromium-molybdenum steel (quenched and tempered) and carbon-manganese steel (quenched and tempered). Using ISO 98091 you can specify minimum requirements for the material, design, construction and workmanship, manufacturing processes, examination and testing at the time of manufacture for refillable seamless steel gas cylinders and tubes.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN ISO 98091:2019 supersedes BS EN ISO 98091:2010. BS EN ISO 98091:2019 includes some technical changes with respect to BS EN ISO 98091:2010. These include:

  • Water capacity extended from below 0,5 l and up to and including 450 l
  • Batch size for tubes now introduced
  • Bend test retained only for prototype tests
  • Test requirements for check analysis (tolerances modified)
  • New test requirements for threads introduced including an informative annexe g
