What is ISO 9809-3 - Gas cylinders about?  

ISO 9809 is a series on gas cylinders. A gas cylinder is a pressure vessel for the storage and containment of gases at above atmospheric pressure. High-pressure gas cylinders are also called bottles. ISO 9809-3 specifies minimum requirements for the material, design, construction and workmanship, manufacturing processes, examination and testing at the time of manufacture for refillable seamless steel gas cylinders and tubes with water capacities up to and including 450 l. ISO 9809-3 is applicable to cylinders and tubes for compressed, liquefied, and dissolved gases and for normalized or normalized and tempered steel cylinders and tubes.

Why should you use ISO 9809-3 - Gas cylinders 

Inside the cylinder the stored contents may be in a state of compressed gas, vapour over liquid, supercritical fluid, or dissolved in a substrate material, depending on the physical characteristics of the contents. A typical gas cylinder design is elongated, standing upright on a flattened bottom end, with the valve and fitting at the top for connecting to the receiving apparatus. ISO 9809-3 provides a specification for the design, manufacture, inspection and testing of a normalized steel cylinder and tube. The objective is to balance design and economic efficiency against international acceptance and universal utility. ISO 9809-3 aims to eliminate existing concerns about climate, duplicate inspections, and restrictions because of a lack of definitive International Standards. 

Materials for the manufacture of normalized or normalized and tempered gas cylinders are those generically classified as carbon-steels or carbon-manganese steels. The maximum actual tensile strength, Rma, for cylinders made from those steels does not exceed 800 MPa. The steel used will fall within one of the categories as described in ISO 9809-3 that are internationally recognized cylinder steels or nationally recognized cylinder steels or new cylinder steels resulting from technical progress. Using ISO 9809-3 you can specify minimum requirements for the material, design, construction and workmanship, manufacturing processes, examination and testing at the time of manufacture for refillable normalized steel gas cylinders and tubes. 

What’s changed since the last update?  

BS EN ISO 9809-3:2019 supersedes BS EN ISO 9809-3:2010. BS EN ISO 9809-3:2019 includes some technical changes with respect to BS EN ISO 9809-3:2010. These include: 

  • Water capacity extended from below 0,5 l and up to and including 450 l 
  • Batch size for tubes now introduced 
  • Bend test retained only for prototype tests 
  • Test requirements for check analysis (tolerances modified) 
  • New test requirements for threads introduced including an informative annex f
