What is BS EN 12521 – Domestic table guidelines about ?

Tables are an integral part of household furniture. All tables – glass-top or otherwise, need to be safe for users. BS EN 12521 specifies the minimum requirements for the safety, strength and durability of all types of domestic tables for use by adults, including those with glass in their construction.  

BS EN 12521 does not apply to office tables and office desks, tables for non-domestic use, tables for educational institutions and outdoor tables for which European Standards exist.  

Note 1: BS EN 12521 does not apply to tables where the table top is not fixed to the understructure, i.e., when applying test 3, Table 2, the top becomes detached from the understructure.  

Note 2: BS EN 12521 does not provide assessment of the suitability of any storage features included in domestic tables. 

Note 3: BS EN 12521 does not include requirements for the durability of castors and height adjustment mechanisms.  

Note 4: BS EN 12521 does not include requirements for electrical safety.  

Note 5: BS EN 12521 does not include requirements for the resistance to ageing and degradation.

BS EN 12521 specifies rigorous strength and durability test which takes domestic tables through – horizontal static load test, vertical static load tests, horizontal durability test, vertical durability test for cantilever or pedestal tables, vertical impact test for table without glass in their construction, vertical impact test for tables with glass in their construction, stability under vertical load test and, stability for tables with extension elements.
